You can put cold water in the thermos

Clean the thermos: Here's how it works

The thermos flask is a practical companion in everyday life: in the office, on hikes or during the train journey, it keeps your coffee or tea nice and warm for several hours. But coffee in particular leaves unsightly stains in the container when it is used frequently and is also strong in taste and smell. UPDATED shows you tricks and home remedies so that you can thoroughly clean your thermos and your drinks will always taste fresh and aromatic.

How to properly clean your thermos

Cleaning your thermos is usually quite straightforward: Rinse them out with lukewarm water after each use. Then clean the jug with detergent, a soft dishcloth and water. Take one with you soft dish brush as an aid if you cannot easily reach all places in the inner vessel with the cloth. You use the same procedure for cleaning thermal mugs.

Avoid using cleaning brushes made of steel or hard plastic, as they can scratch or even damage the vessel - especially if the inner vessel of your thermos is made of glass. This is either provided with a mirror or an additional coating. Such coatings are in any case more sensitive than inner vessels made of stainless steel.

Even if it seems temptingly convenient: Do not wash your thermos in the dishwasher. There is a vacuum between the outer housing and the inner vessel. If water gets in between, there is a risk that the thermos will be damaged. With intensive washing in the machine, there is a good chance that water will penetrate through the fine cracks in the housing.

You can clean the outer casing of your vacuum jug with a damp, soft cloth. Then dry the surface with a tea towel. Do not use sponges or abrasive cloths to clean the case. After cleaning, turn the jug upside down to dry. Store your thermos with the lid open to prevent bad smells from developing inside.

Stainless steel or glass?

The double-walled inner vessels of thermos flasks are either made of glass or stainless steel. Both materials have their advantages, but also disadvantages. The great advantage of stainless steel vessels is that they are much less sensitive than glass vessels with their special coating. They are less affected by vibrations, scratchy or pointed objects. Some glass vessels are not even allowed to be filled with carbonated beverages or sugar due to their special coating. However, the stainless steel vessels have poorer thermal insulation. After a few years, the insulating properties usually decrease a little.

Special cleaners for thermos flasks are also available in the drugstore. These usually come in powder or tablet form and are specially designed to clean the inside of the jug without leaving a bad aftertaste. You should only use these cleaners for vacuum jugs with a glass inner vessel if they are designated for it. Alternatively, you can use some home remedies, which often work just as well. The following applies to both: They are not intended for daily cleaning. Even if you use your thermos flask or mug every day, it is completely sufficient if you use them all four to eight weeks or if necessary, if coffee stains or deposits have formed, clean more intensively.
