NFL player How good was Eric Dickerson

1987

In Super Bowl XXI, the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants face off. It will be a similar boring affair as in the previous year, in which the Giants win with 39:20.
* * *
The television contracts between the NFL and the three major TV networks have expired. In the negotiations for new contracts, the league has the worse cards, as the ratings for football broadcasts have been falling slightly for several years.
The dollar flow, however, remained higher than the skeptics assumed. Thanks to cable broadcaster ESPN, which this time played in the concert of the big three, ABC, NBC and CBS, the NFL received $ 1.428 billion for the next three years.
* * *
The video referees will be there again next season. The club owners voted 22: 6 to keep the system.
* * *
Quarterback Vinny Testaverde was number 1 in this year's draft. Like last year, the Buccaneers had the first choice again and they made it easy for Vinny to sign with a $ 8.2 million offer.
* * *
Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson, Raiders punter Ray Guy, Falcon quarterback Steve Bartkowski and wide receiver Sammy White of the Vikings announce their retirement from football.
* * *
AMERICAN BOWL II was again a great success. The Rams won 28:27 with a 4 yard run by White 28 seconds before the end of the game.
On the day before the game, an international soccer match between England and the best players from the rest of the world took place at the same location for the 100th birthday of the English Football Association.
That game had 61,000 spectators, American Bowl II had 73,000 spectators.
* * *
Again, a strike threat from the players' union is hanging over the beginning NFL season.
The players want to abolish the draft in order to be able to play poker for the highest possible contract right from the start of their career.
That would lead to a ruinous price war between the individual teams, which the league can never agree to.

Week 2

Hopes that a strike could be averted have sunk to a minimum.
Gene Upshaw, the players' union boss knows the league can't give in to its insane demands, but he doesn't give in an inch.
Week 2 is played to the end, after which the players' strike begins.

Week 3

STRIKE !
For the second time in five years, the NFL players are on strike.
If they had valid reasons to do so during the 1982 strike, this time it is the strike of a stubborn man: Gene Upshaws. This time the club owners have prepared themselves excellently for the situation. Alternative teams are formed within a short period of time, with players who narrowly missed the leap into a team, old players who had actually retired, and other athletes.

Week 4

After an interruption of one week, gaming operations will resume.
Many alternate teams are interspersed with original players who broke the strike line.
Viewers perceive these strike breaker games differently. In Detroit there are only 5,000 spectators at the stadium, in Denver it is 38,000. The TV ratings are surprisingly good.

Week 5

138,000 spectators in Dallas, Denver and Cleveland alone.
Many original players no longer see a chance that Gene Upshaw's demands will be met and end the strike. The TV ratings almost reach the normal standard.
The club owners are beaming winners as the players' union admits its defeat and ends the strike.

Week 6

Many original players had failed to report back to their teams in time, so that many alternative players will still be playing this week.
Bill quarterback Jim Kelly alone lost $ 260,000 on the strike because no strike fund had been set up.
Each alternate player received $ 3,125 per bet, plus half the bonus of their teams' playoff games.

Week 7

Many superstars who had transferred their fans because of the strike get to hear the boos in the stadiums.
* * *
The regular Dolphins lose their first game in the new Dolphins Stadium 34:31 in overtime against the Bills. A week earlier, the alternative Dolphins had withdrawn the Chiefs 42-0 at the official opening.
* * *
Eric Dickerson is no longer happy with his Rams salary. Since he is not concentrating enough on his task in the team at the moment, Coach Robinson wants to put him on the bench for a while.

Week 8

In a night and fog action, Eric Dickerson was sold to the Indianapolis Colts. Here he now earns $ 1.4 million instead of $ 682,000 in Los Angeles.
In his first game for the foals, he runs 10 times for 38 yards.

Week 9

The St. Louis Cardinals started the biggest race to catch up in the history of the NFL. At the start of the fourth quarter they are 28-3 behind Tampa Bay, and they still manage to win 31:28.
* * *
In the historic first Sunday NIGHT game on cable broadcaster ESPN, the Giants beat the Patriots by 17:10.

Week 10

NFL chairman Pete Rozelle announced that two new teams would join the league by 1990 at the latest.
* * *
The longest losing streak in the NFL came to an end. The Colts win against Miami for the first time in 14 games.
* * *
Herschel Walker runs a 60 yard touchdown in extra time against New England. This is the longest overtime touchdown run in NFL history.

Week 12

Dan Marino threw at least one touchdown pass in thirty consecutive games. The Bills put an end to this series. They hold Miami without any points and win 27-0.
* * *
Indianapolis beats Houston with 51:27. This is the Colts' biggest win in 11 years.

Week 13

The cowboys got the receipt for their lousy achievements in the last few years. Only 40,103 spectators saw their loss to the Falcons, the worst attendance in the history of the Texas Stadium.
* * *
New NFL record for 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, who completed 23 passes in a row.

Week 15

In college they all ran 6,728 yards a year ago. In their first year in the NFL, they only ran 925 yards together. We're talking about the running backs called up this year in the first round: Brent Fullwood (Packers) 260 yards, DJDozier (Vikings) 238 yards, Roger Vick (Jets) 238 yards, Paul Palmer (Chiefs) 133 yards, Alonzo Highsmith (Houston) 45 yards and Terrence Flagler (49ers) 11 yards.
* * *
Jerry Rice, wide receiver of the 49ers, sets a new NFL record with 20 touchdown passes caught in one season.

Week 16

Steve Largent, wide receiver for the Seahawks, takes another NFL record. Largent caught 752 passes in his NFL career, overtaking Charlie Joiner, the ex-Chargers wide receiver, by 2 passes.
* * *
Unlimited cheers in New Orleans. For the first time in their 21-year club history, the Saints can finish a season with a positive score. The 12-3 points also mean the first participation in the playoffs since the club was founded.
* * *
Farewell to the greatest football player of all time. Walter Payton played his last game for the Bears that week ... and for us. His shirt number was retired last week before his last home game of the season in Chicago.
* * *
The Cardinals played their last game in St. Louis. Starting next season, they'll be playing in Phoenix, Arizona.
* * *
The Broncos quarterback John Elway is named NFL Player of the Year.
* * *
Jim Mora, Head Coach of the Saints, is named NFL Coach of the Year.
* * *
Again, many players end their careers at the end of the season. Including well-known people like Safety Gary Fencik from the Bears, Safety Donnie Shell and wide receiver John Stallworth from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The last two had been with the Steelers for 14 years and took part in all four Super Bowl victories.

1988

Super Bowl XXII sees the Broncos again, who are considered easy favorites against the Redskins. How can you make a mistake. As in the previous year, Denver can be slaughtered without resistance, this time with 42:10.
The game's MVP became the Redskins' black quarterback Doug Williams, with 18 of 29 passes for 340 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.
* * *
There were two games on European soil this year.
Game 1 was the annual American Bowl in London. Here the Miami Dolphins defeated the San Francisco 49ers with 27:21.
Game 2 took place in Gothenburg, Sweden, and here the winner was Minnesota with 28:21 over the Bears.
* * *
Last year's player strike cost the NFL $ 60 million. The league had to repay that much to the TV companies due to lower ratings.

week 1

Quarterbacks Bernie Kosar (Browns), Warren Moon, (Oilers) and Joe Montana (49ers) are injured. This is the beginning of a worrying development as more quarterbacks are injured this season than ever before.
* * *
The NFL is cracking down on drug offenders in the league. After the first game day, seven sinners, who now have a compulsory break of thirty days, join those who were caught in the preparation phase. Of course, junior junior Lawrence Taylor is among those caught.
* * *
The Cardinals, now playing in Phoenix, have the highest entry prices in the league. A normal seat at the 50 yard line costs $ 200.
* * *
In week 1, Vinny Testaverde earned his nickname "The Interception Master". The Buccaneers' multimillion quarterback throws 5 interceptions.

Week 2

Tony Dorsett, who joined the Broncos from the Cowboys, has his first 100 yard game for Denver. Against San Diego he runs 113 yards.

Week 4

In the Monday Night game, the Raiders will face the Broncos with their new head coach, Mike Shanahan. So far, Shanahan had coordinated the offense in Denver. Los Angeles wins 30:27.

Week 5

The New England Patriots change hands for $ 85 million. His name is now Victor Kiam.

Week 7

Mark Gastineau, star defender of the New York Jets, hangs up his football boots. The reason for this sensational step is Brigitte Nielsen, also called: Silicone Biggie.
After the prevented actress announced that she had cancer, and after rioting fans in the stadium during the game of the Jets against the Bills molested Silvester Stallone's ex-wife, Gastineau only wanted to be there for his Biggie. All that where Gastineau finally had a good season again after a long time.

Week 9

On November 2nd, Bears Head Coach Mike Ditka suffers a heart attack while exercising.
* * *
The Seattle Seahawks change hands for $ 99 million.
* * *
Meanwhile, Tony Dorsett is the second best running back of all time, behind the unassailable Walter Payton. Dorsett overtook Jim Brown and Franco Harris this season.

Week 11

Detroit Lions head coach Darryl Rogers is fired. He got 18-40 points with the club. He is succeeded by Defensive Coordinator Wayne Fontes.
* * *
Mike Ditka is back on the sidelines. In the important game against Washington he really wanted to be back with his team.
* * *
Joe Montana gets a three-year contract from the 49ers, worth $ 7.65 million.

Week 12

After this game day, the Buffalo Bills will be the first safe playoff participant of the current season. An AFC team has never qualified for the finals so early since the league switched to the 16-game schedule in 1978.

Week 15

Off for Washington and Denver.
Both clubs, which faced each other in the Super Bowl earlier this year, are eliminated from the playoff race due to defeats this week. Denver loses 42:14 to Seattle.
Washington suffered a bitter 24:17 defeat against arch rivals Dallas. The cowboys had 10 before this game! Games lost in a row and were considered easy prey.

Week 16

The Denver Broncos are firing all defense-related coaches, including Defensive Coordinator Joe Collier.
* * *
After the AFC Wild Card game between Houston and Cleveland, there is a dispute between Art Modell, the owner of the Browns, and Marty Schottenheimer, the head coach. Model wants to hire an offensive coordinator because he didn't like the way Schottenheimer led the attack. Schottenheimer must have heard the news and resigned.

1989

For three and a half years the Bengals played a no-huddle offense without the league taking offense. Only 1 hour and 50 minutes before kick-off for the AFC final does she inform the team that she has changed the rules for the benefit of the defense, which has often been caught by hitting the ball with too many players on the field. Should Cinci play the ball when the defense has more than 11 players on the field, she is committing unsportsmanlike conduct and will be punished. The reason for this sudden rule change was the behavior of the Seahawks, who often faked injuries in the Divisional Playoff game to buy time, and the announcement by Bill's head coach Mary Levy to do the same.
* * *
How was that? We finally wanted a great Super Bowl?
Here he is. The Cincinnati Bengals stand up to the San Francisco 49ers and it will be a dramatic, incredibly exciting endgame. Only 39 seconds before the end of the game, the 49ers win with a pass from Montana to John Taylor with 20:16.
The MVP of the game was Jerry Rice with 215 yards from 11 passes captured and 1 touchdown.
* * *
The Dallas Cowboys change hands for 150 million dollars.
Jerry Jones, the new man at the helm, immediately fires Tom Landry, who coached the team for 29 years. In his place, Johnson gives the job to his old college friend, Jimmy Johnson.
The style of this dismissal of a coaching legend arouses great indignation in Dallas.
* * *
Troy Aikman was number 1 in the draft, but the players who hit were running backs Eric Metcalf (Cleveland), Barry Sanders (Detroit) and safety Steve Atwater (Denver).
* * *
The NFL is expanding. If not by finally taking on two more clubs, then at least worldwide. In addition to the traditional American Bowl in football-hungry London, tens of thousands flocked to the Japan Bowl in Tokyo. Here the Rams won 16:13 against the 49ers. In London, Philadelphia beats the Browns by 17:13.
* * *
The NFL season begins without a chair.
Pete Rozelle has submitted his departure and will only remain in office temporarily until a successor is found.

Dallas' first game under Jimmy Johnson goes badly in the pants. The Saints win 28-0 and it shows what the season will be like for the Cowboys.

Joe Montana doesn't want to stand back, of course, and he fits for 428 yards.

After his top performance last week, Dan Marino is at the lower end of the scale this week. He only gets 11 of 29 passes for 103 yards to the man.

Week 5

The NFL has its first black head coach.
The Raiders fire Mike Shanahan, and Art Shell, a former fame player for the team, takes his place.

Week 6

A successor for Pete Rozelle has been found. Paul Tagliabue was elected after 12 ballots in over 50 hours of meetings over five days. Tagliabue has been a lawyer for the NFL since 1969, so he knows the matter very well.

The Oilers celebrate their first to zero victory since December 20th. 1980.
They slaughter the dolphins with 27: 0.

* * *
When the Rams go into the last quarter with a 27:10 lead against the 49ers, I want to turn off the television, disappointed. But then Joe Cool starts doing magic and throws two touchdown passes over 90 yards. In the end, San Francisco remains the winner with 30:27.

In 1934 it was the Bears and the Lions.

Week 10

Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas made fun of chasing Seattle quarterback Dave Krieg all day - and sagging.
Thomas Krieg sank seven times, a new NFL record.
Nevertheless, Dave Krieg was voted AFC Offensive Player of the Week, because he was able to narrowly escape Thomas an eighth time and throw a touchdown pass at 17:16.
For his part, Thomas was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

A festival for the most patriotic nation on earth.
In the end, the team named New York, the Giants, would be just ahead of the team from Buffalo.
* * *
Brett Favre was one of the noteworthy players called up that year.

1992

This is where the history of the NFL ends (for the time being). Due to the low click rates, it is currently not worthwhile to continue this complex series.
HERE you will find what is in the news from the 1997 season when Win-Football was founded ... as a "quasi-continuation" of history ...
