Tutorial: Getting Started with Visual Basic in Visual Studio

In this tutorial for Visual Basic (VB) you will learn how to develop with Visual Studio and you will create and run various console apps. You will also familiarize yourself with some of the features of the Visual Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Create a project

First, let's create a Visual Basic application project. The project type contains all the template files you need before you start editing.

  1. Open Visual Studio 2017.

  2. Click in the menu bar at the top file > New > Project.

  3. In the dialog box, expand New project the entry on the left Visual Basicand click .NET Core. In the middle area, select the option Console application (.NET Core) out. Then name the project What is your name.

Add a workload (optional)

If you like the project template Console App (.NET Core) (Console app (.NET Core)) is missing, just add the workload Cross-platform .NET Core development added. You have the following options for adding the workload, depending on which Visual Studio 2017 updates are installed on the computer.

Option 1: Use the New Project Dialog Box

  1. Click in the dialog box New project in the left area on the link Open the Visual Studio Installer.

  2. The Visual Studio installer will start. Choose the workload Cross-platform .NET Core development , then click To adjust.

Option 2: Use the Tools menu bar

  1. Close the dialog box New project, and click on the top menu bar Tools > Get tools and features.

  2. The Visual Studio installer will start. Choose the workload Cross-platform .NET Core development , then click To adjust.

  2. Select in the start window Create a new project out.

  3. Select in the window Create a new project in the list of languages Visual Basic out. Then select in the list of platforms Windows and in the list of project types console out.

    After applying the language, platform and project type filters, select the template Console application and then Further out.

    Note

    If the template Console application is not displayed, you can use the window Create a new project to install. In the message, choose Can't find what you're looking for? the link Install additional tools and features out.

    Then select the workload in the Visual Studio installer Cross-platform .NET Core development out.

    Then select the button To change in the Visual Studio installer. You may be asked to save your work; if so, do that. Next, choose Further to install the workload. Then return to step 2 in this "Create a Project" procedure.

  4. Enter in the window Configure a new project in The Field Project nameWhat is your name a. Then click on Further.

  5. In the window Additional Information should .NET Core 3.1 already selected as the target framework. If not, choose .NET Core 3.1 out. Then choose Create out.

    Visual Studio opens your new project.

Create a "What is your name" application

Let's create an app that asks you for your name and then displays it along with the date and time. To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. If it's not already open, open the project What is your name.

  2. Immediately after the opening bracket that follows the line and before the line, type the following Visual Basic code:

    This code replaces the existing WriteLine, Write and ReadKey instructions.

  3. Choose the green button Start or press F5to build and run your first app.

  4. When the console window opens, enter your name. The console window should look like the following screenshot:
