The two most important blood characteristics are blood type and rhesus factor. When blood components are transfused, donor and recipient blood must be compatible on the basis of these characteristics.
There is a high demand for blood reserves with blood group 0, especially when caring for emergency patients, since these can be used universally.

The Viennese doctor Karl Landsteiner published the blood groups known today on November 14, 1901 and is therefore considered to have discovered them. Together with Alexander Salomon Wiener, an American serologist, he also discovered the rhesus system in 1937.

The blood group is classified as a blood group based on various characteristics. In human blood, there are primarily different proteins on the surface of the red blood cells. These act as antigens. When it comes into contact with foreign blood, your own immune system forms antibodies and clumping occurs. Blood transfusions were therefore only successful by chance before the blood groups were discovered and were often fatal. Today 29 different blood type systems are known. Most of them are insignificant for everyday medical practice, but can be decisive in certain diseases. The three most important are the AB0, the Rhesus and the Kell systems. The Kell factor is a blood group characteristic that is identified by the letters Kk (Kell positive) and kk (Kell negative). The Rh system distinguishes between "Rhesus factor positive (Rh +)" and "Rhesus factor negative (Rh-)". The AB0 system divides the four blood groups A, B, AB and 0.
