Which number corresponds to 666

Pay please! 666 - God's work and the devil's contribution

The 666 has interesting mathematical properties: For example, it is the sum of the squares of the first seven prime numbers (666 = 22 + 32 + 52 + 72 + 112 + 132 + 172), a triangular number, i.e. the sum of the first 36 numbers (666 = 1 + 2 + ... + 36) and a Smith number, where the sum of the digits corresponds to the sum of the prime factors: 666 = 2 3 3 37 and 6 + 6 + 6 = 2 + 3 + 3 + (3 + 7) = 18.

But even in the mathematical context, the 666 is often reduced to its mystical values. Among other things, it is located in the center of a constructed prime number palidrome, the diabolical prime number (also Belphegor's prime number), has given numbers with 666 digits the nickname apocalyptic numbers ... and of course there is also an apocalyptic magic square: The sum of the prime numbers in the square below is horizontal , vertical and diagonal 666.

Mystical 666

The biblical interpretation of 666 superimposes all mathematical considerations: "And it brings everyone, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the servants, that they should receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead; and that no one can buy or sell but only he who has the mark, the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Whoever understands, calculate the number of the beast, for it is a man's number; and his number is 666. As the number of the devil or the beast, 666 is deeply inscribed in Western history, from the Bible to the suitcase in "Pulp Fiction".

As a mystical or religious number, 666 occurs several times in the Old Testament. This is due to the fact that the number in the Hebrew septary system (0,1,2,3,4,5,6) of the calendar and time cycles had several meanings and was also important in the "Babylonian" duodecimal system. Six is the number of man who was created on the sixth day and six is half of the sublime divisor 12, the perfection of the universe. Seven is the number of God and the day he rested, symbolized by the menorah. 777 accordingly stands for divine perfection. As a monetary value 666 stands for the legendary wealth of Solomon, as a time value our "five to twelve".

In the second step there was and is an abundance of deliberations as to who could be meant by 666 named in Revelation. Nero (in Hebrew "Kesar Neron" results in the number 666 according to the tradition of gematria) was the first choice, but other Roman emperors such as Hadrian and Trajan could also be considered. Even the "Marxists" who are otherwise averse to heavenly things, such as Friedrich Engels, cheerfully speculated who might be meant. Among countless occult interpretations of the 666, the only "grand master" of all cults Aleister Crowley should be mentioned, who called himself a beast or an antichrist and signed his letters with 666.

Number of the devil

As the "number of the devil", 666 also fulfilled its function in the largest opposing church: When the devil, hell and indulgences were driven out of Christianity with Martin Luther, the pope had to be converted. The mathematician and theologian Michael Stifel not only calculated the end of the world on October 19, 1533 from the numbers in the Bible, but also provided the mathematical proof that the then Pope Leo X is the apocalyptic beast. With the numerical values for Latin letters adopted from the Kabbalah, Stifel "unmasked" LEO DECIMUS as MDCLXVI = 1666. Luther himself considered the Pope to be the apocalyptic beast, but described Stifel's calculations as nonsensical.

Of course, the computer also plays an important role in modern interpretations of the 666. It starts with the name. Because if we convert the letters of our alphabet in steps of 6, such as A = 6, B = 12 and C = 18, etc., entirely in the gematrical tradition of Michael Stifel, we get the number of the beast 666 for the word "computer", where otherwise there would only be a 111. Incidentally, the fact that Intel's Pentium III in the Coppermine version was not allowed to run with 666 MHz, but with the very unusual 667 MHz, is pretty weird.

The gematrical interpretation, which the World Wide Web interprets as an expression for the apocalypse, is less well known: Since there are no separate numerical values in the Hebrew alphabet, letters stand for numbers and "Wav" for 6, so that WWW = 666 is interpreted.

Another relatively modern variant is the large keyboard conspiracy that sees the 666 and submission to the beast at work in the number fields of cell phones, calculators and ATMs. Add horizontally 1 + 2 + 3 = 6, 4 + 5 + 6 = 15. If you add the individual digits 1 + 5, you get 6 again, the same goes for 7 + 8 + 9 = 24 and 2 + 4 = 6.

666 in pop culture

There are innumerable references in pop culture where the magical qualities of the 666 are always good for reference. The suitcase with the lock code 666 in "Pulp Fiction" has already been mentioned, "The Phantom in the Opera" and especially "The Omen" build the 666 into the film plot, in the latter as a fear of the satanic number. There is even a scientific name for it, derived from the Greek name of the number: Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobie.

The 666 appears playfully in Keith Haring's pictures, but it is very serious in Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci Code", where the glass pyramid designed by IMPei in the Louvre should consist of exactly 666 glass windows at the behest of the former French President François Mitterand - in fact there are 673. In the broad field of pop music, Led Zeppelin's song "Stairway to Heaven" is said to have satanic lyrics. If you play the end backwards, the devil and the 666 are said to be conjured up - but this requires some imagination:

For the first time unencrypted was the 666 in 1972 with the Greek band "Aphrodite's Child", as songwriter Vangelis set the Revelation of John to music. The 666 has played a permanent role since the dawn of heavy metal. Iron Maiden set her a musical memorial with the song "The Number of the Beast" in 1982. (vza)
