Author text
Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1794) achieved some fame as a young ballad poet, but then had to fight his way through life as a poorly paid bailiff and university lecturer in Göttingen. His version of the Münchhausiaden, panned by the criticism, was enthusiastically received by the reading public and gave him late popularity.
