Lawn mower engine - only which one?

of Johnny01 »Wed Nov 09, 2016 18:29

Good day,

I hope that some of you can help me again; D.

I have the following problem. The connecting rod of my John Deere LR 175 ride-on mower tore off after 11 1/2 years. Since the engine is now older and has already run a lot, I wanted to do without a repair and build a new one.

Now the question is which one. I could of course build the same one on it again, or one with a little more power and then two cylinders.

I did a little research and came across the following models (the dimensions of the crankshaft and the mounting points are identical everywhere according to the manufacturer's drawings):

B&S 17,5HP Intek OHV 1 cylinder
B&S 18 HP Intek OHV 2 cylinder

Kawasaki FR 651 V or FS 651 V, 2 cylinders with 18.8 HP

Kohler SV 710 2 cylinder 20 HP

The two B&S engines and the Kohler are priced on average at € 850. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a price for the Kawasaki. Honda is way too expensive for me.

Now the question is, which engine? B&S is known to me and has also been a good term so far. I've also had Kohler engines in my hand, but haven't experienced it for a long time and I know that the Kawasaki are built into the original JD ride-on mowers, but I haven't heard anything positive or negative either.
Maybe you can tell me a few more experiences.
As always, I look forward to your advice and criticism.

Best regards

Stephan

What kind of engine was on it so far ??? I'll take a B&S - or ???

B&S are throwaway motors - but "cheap" - sufficient for many applications. How many hours will you mow in 10 years ???

Kohler are industrial engines - therefore they are also more expensive

My thought: Should your current one be a B&S engine that lasted almost 12 years now! ... install one of those again, if it lasts that long again, your mower is almost 24 years old and may already have other ailments.

My opinion greetings

Until today the B&S 17.5 HP Intek OHV was mounted. He does his 8-10 hours a week, estimated from April to November.

A two cylinder engine should run a lot smoother, right?

There's nothing wrong with B&S - good documentation, good spare parts supply. I have not regretted having rebuilt a 10HP with a connecting rod torn off! Of course, there is still a risk due to possible failures due to undetected crankshaft distortion, housing damage, etc.
Connecting rod tearing often results from a lack of oil.
In terms of vibration, a two-cylinder is not much better than a single-cylinder!

It's running again!

I have also rebuilt Honda and B&S engines, but in my case the crankshaft is down, the connecting rod or the bearing has eaten away and the cylinder running surface has a big flaw.

But thanks for the tips.

Kind regards
