Interesting facts about Hindi

Spread of Hindi

Around 200 million people speak Hindi as their mother tongue. Since Hindi is not only the official language, but also the most important lingua franca in India alongside English, it is spoken by significantly more people as a second language: More than half a billion Indians speak Hindi. The language is thus the fourth most widely spoken language in the world (after Mandarin, English and Spanish).

The main distribution areas of Hindi are central and northern India, for example in the region around Delhi and in the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. Hindi is the most widely spoken language in the Indo-Aryan language family.

The Indian script: Devanagari

Hindi has also been a written language since the 12th century. To write Hindi, you have to use the Devanagari alphabet. Devanagari is also used as a script by other languages of the Indian subcontinent, such as Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit.

Devanagari is a so-called syllabary, in which no individual letters are represented as characters, but usually whole syllables. So it happens that every consonant in this alphabet basically has a vowel in it.

Language diversity in India

In the Indian constitution, Hindi and English are established as official languages. In addition, 22 other languages were recognized as national languages in the constitution.

But in such a large country there are of course many more languages: a total of 35 different languages are spoken by at least one million people each: Many of these languages also have their own script and so there are twelve different alphabets in India. Of course, this makes communication between the various population groups in the country more difficult.

Therefore, if a North Indian wants to converse with a South Indian, he will either speak Hindi or use English.

The two twin languages Hindi and Urdu

The "twin language" of Hindi is Urdu. If a Hindi and Urdu speaker talk to each other on a day-to-day basis, they can understand each other without major problems. Urdu is also spoken in India (there it is the mother tongue of around 50 million people) and in neighboring Pakistan.

The main difference between the two languages lies in the borrowings they have taken from other languages: many of the words in Hindi come from Sanskrit. Urdu, on the other hand, uses a variety of Persian and Arabic words. And so the two languages work with completely different writing systems: While Hindi is written with Devanagari, the Arabic script is used in Urdu.
