Why a chess trainer?

There is truly no shortage of chess books, databases, videos and, last but not least, good advice on the Internet.

But how can you optimally benefit from these extensive training options? How can you train in the best possible way individually?

My many years of experience as a chess trainer plays a role here.

What is the advantage of individually designed chess training?

Every player has their own specific talents and interests.

For example, some prefer tactical positions to positional ones. Others prefer lengthy endgames or unusual opening variations.

Individually designed chess training pursues a concept of specially tailored training content.

Personal things also play a role, such as age, available leisure time or workload.

But what if I would rather take chess courses?

Nothing speaks against it if you want to attend a chess course.

Chess courses are events that usually take place regularly, often weekly or monthly over a longer period of time.

Does it take a long time to get stronger?

Patience is an important virtue in chess.

The training progress depends on many different parameters such as the training intensity or the skill level already achieved.

Whether and in what way the personal maximum performance has already been exhausted also plays a certain role.

In general, after the start of training, the subjective feeling that you are playing better or that you understand more about chess occurs very quickly. Even improving objectively measurable knowledge does not take long.

The way from a better game to actually more rating points is complex.

Does the best trainer who suffers the most?

Not at all.

Only those who keep the joy of training and the curiosity for new things will be successful in the long term.

I am not happy with my game and would like to switch my openings. Does this make sense?

I can only judge that after a detailed examination of the individual cases.

Of course, it is possible that some of your openings do not suit your playing style at all.

It is much more common, however, that problems in the game are wrongly simply attributed to the opening.

A fundamental change of repertoire hardly helps here, but it is a huge effort that costs a lot of time that could be used much better otherwise.

Another thing is if you want to change your repertoire for variety or to improve your understanding of the game.

Is the mental area important in chess?

Combat strength, self-confidence, the will to win, the right timing, but also emotional competence play a major role.

This includes, for example, recognizing whether you or your counterpart are emotionally affected by a surprise in the course of the game and are able to react appropriately.

I want to understand chess better, but not play tournaments or train in competitive sports. Is that possible?

Yes of course.

For many people, tournament chess is just too stressful or too time-consuming.

For example, casual training is also an option if you want to play better so that you might have a chance against someone in your circle of friends.

Or you want to better understand games that you follow online or re-enact in newspapers.

I have little time for chess training. Can I still get better?

Yes, but time is a very important factor.

The less time there is for chess, the more necessary is optimal time and quality management when training.

Am i too old already?

No way!

An important part of individually designed training is age-appropriate training. The sporting climax may still be ahead of you.

Apart from that, playing chess improves your concentration and awareness. That helps in daily life.

Can I also only train individual areas?

Yes, of course, especially to improve weaknesses in certain areas.

For example, if you have difficulties using technical advantages in the endgame, specific exercises with lead positions are ideal.

Can I practice opening, endgame or strategy as well as tactics?

The various sub-areas differ in the way in which they are trained, but considerably.

Details can be found under the links to the respective special training topics.

What can I train?

There is (almost) nothing that you cannot train.

Tactical and strategic motive recognition as well as numeracy and imagination are particularly important.

Does solving studies make sense?

That depends on your personal training situation. Study solving trains motivational knowledge and imagination very intensively, but it also takes a lot of time and is particularly strenuous.

I never get into the final. Will endgame training bring me anything at all?

Never getting into the final is not an advantage. Excessive play would only be one possible reason.

Nevertheless, endgame training will help you in your playful development. This will fundamentally improve your understanding of the game.

However, the training should be tailored to your individual needs and well dosed.

Is there a difference between the terms chess teacher and chess trainer?

The terms chess teacher and chess trainer are repeatedly used as a synonym.

In the narrower sense, and predominantly understood in this way, a chess teacher in Austria is anyone who teaches chess at a public or private school.

The basic work of chess teachers in schools lays the foundation for chess in society.

How do professionals train?

With a lot of computer support and, above all, very, very, very intensive.

This is not possible any other way in the top segment today.

Will the corona virus permanently change chess?

The future is of course difficult to predict, but I suspect it is.

The trend towards gaming on the Internet will likely continue to grow, and above all more rapidly, not least due to the general increase in digitalization.

Regular championship operations during the year could come under considerable pressure in the long term, especially if fewer and fewer people were willing to take long journeys for a single tournament game.

Open tournament organizers would probably have less to fear, because combining chess with vacation will probably remain attractive even after Corona.

What does the great hype about the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit mean?

Everyone is talking about chess. In connection with this, of course, there is a general increase in interest in learning more about chess or perhaps even playing it yourself.
