Definition: what is a binary code?

A binary code is a code that represents information only on the basis of two different symbols (0 and 1). Binary codes are used to digitally map and process information. Various pieces of information, be it numbers or letters, are translated into a sequence of 0 and 1 and can then be deciphered by the computer.

How does a binary code work?

In the first step, information is converted into a binary code. The way it works is that ready-made codes replace the numbers or letters. For example, the number twelve in the decimal system is encoded with the binary code 1100 and the letter A with 1000001. A digit in such a binary system is called a bit. The two different states of a bit (0 or 1) can now be displayed magnetically on storage media. This method is used with magnetic storage media such as floppy disks. An optical representation can also take place. This is achieved by means of a recess in the object. Binary codes, i.e. zeros and ones, are engraved in CDs or DVDs. These bits can be read and decoded by computers or other digital machines. This means that initial information can be read again by humans.

What types of binary codes are there?

Under the generic term of binary code, there are further distinctions between many codes that are based on the binary system. For example there is the dual code, the BCD code, the EBCDIC code, the ASCII code or the Gray code.

How can a binary code be read?

A binary code consists of a certain number of digits. The code can be translated by multiplying each digit by: 2 to the power of the digit's position in the sequence of digits. However, this position starts counting at 0 instead of 1 and is read from right to left. After all digits have been multiplied by this value, the individual results are added up.

Take the example 0101. The sequence of digits consists of four digits. The calculation looks like this:

23 * 0 + 22 * 1 + 21 * 0 + 20 * 1 =
8 * 0 + 4 * 1 + 2 * 0 + 1 * 1 = 5

The binary code 0101 therefore stands for the number 5. Alternatively, the bits assigned with 0 cannot be deciphered and left out, since the result of these will result in 0 anyway and will not affect the result.

In which areas is the binary code used?

The binary code is used in the areas of digital information transmission. Data is transmitted through storage media such as a CD using a binary code, as is data from the world wide web.

What does binary code have to do with the subject of time recording?

The biometric time recording, which can be controlled by fingerprint, iris scan or the like, uses the binary code. The reason for this is that the information of a fingerprint or an iris is stored in the system. This means that the unique characteristics of a person's physiological characteristics are converted into a code consisting of 1 and 0. Personal data is not saved because the binary code cannot reproduce the real image of the fingerprint.
