Why is school life so interesting

Primary school: Tips, information and ideas about everyday school life

The elementary school, which is also called primary level, generally comprises the first four years of schooling. In Berlin and Brandenburg, on the other hand, primary school lasts six years. According to this, children between the ages of six and eleven are taught in the facility. After primary school, the children move on to secondary school.

The individual years are divided into classes. Each class consists of about 20 children and a class teacher. While he teaches most of the hours in this class, some subjects are taken over by other teachers. In some elementary schools there are cross-year classes.

Subjects in elementary school

The aim of every elementary school is to impart basic skills in the individual areas. Therefore, subjects like math or German are indispensable in elementary school. First, the children learn to read, write and do arithmetic. Based on this, material lessons take place in the elementary school. English is also part of the curriculum in primary school.

In elementary school, primary school children learn not only theoretical, but also practical things that are used in everyday life. Traffic education also plays an important role in primary school, as most children come to school on foot or by bike.

In an interdisciplinary way, it is also important that the children learn to learn. Above all, this should enable them to have a smooth transition to secondary school.

The school choice

Registration in primary school must take place one year before starting school. You will be informed of this by post. However, the school in your catchment area is usually chosen. If this is not available for various reasons, because the supervision time is too short or your workplace is in a completely different direction, you can also choose the school yourself.

In addition to private schools, which are very similar to the mainstream school except for high standards, alternative concepts would also be the Waldorf school or the Montessori school, for example.
