Belgium: Ataturk was gay

Brussels (queer.de) - A Walloon textbook in which Kemal Ataturk is referred to as gay has caused resentment between Belgium and Turkey. Marie Arena, the education minister for the French-speaking part of the country, has already described the inclusion of the founder of modern Turkey in the 144-page book "Fighting Homophobia" as a "mistake". It contains a list of historical gays, including several popes, Leonardo da Vinci and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. "The source for this list was a website from California. Unfortunately, the makers of the book did not double-check the information. It was a 'copy and paste' accident," the minister told the newspaper "Zaman". A spokesman for the Turkish embassy in Brussels declared the matter over: "This is a very delicate matter, but the Belgian authorities have finally admitted their mistake." The book had not yet been delivered to the schools. It wasn't until the beginning of the month that there was a stir in Greek internet videos describing Ataturk as gay. In the country, "YouTube" was even blocked for a short time, on which these videos could be found (queer.de reported). The denigration of Ataturk or Turkishness is illegal in the EU candidate country and can be punished with long imprisonment. (dk)
