Creative writing pays off
Creative writing: short explanation
Creative writing is a concept in which the writing of texts is understood as a creative process. It is assumed that writing is a craft the tools of which anyone can learn. There are many methods for creative writing. These are closely related to creativity techniques.
In the USA in particular, creative writing has a long history. The term “creative writing” came up there in the 19th century in literary studies seminars at universities. In Germany, however, creative writing has only received attention since the 1970s.
There are a variety of methods and techniques available for creative writing. In the broadest sense, these are creative approaches to brainstorming that help with text creation. The aim is to break down barriers to writing and to give free rein to creativity when writing texts.
In addition to the use of creative writing techniques in connection with literature, creative writing is also used in psychology in the context of therapies. It serves as an opportunity for self-awareness and as a form of self-expression.
Methods of creative writing
The methods of creative writing range from a playful approach to texts to working with literary forms. The most diverse ways of inspiration can be used for text production. A multitude of creative methods are often used in combination. Freewriting and clustering are particularly popular methods of creative writing.
In freewriting, the author writes down everything unfiltered that comes to mind - whether word, word combination or sentence. Thoughts are put on paper unfiltered without interruption or censorship. The pen is not put down. If there are no ideas, the last word is repeated until a new idea occurs. The aim is to overcome initial difficulties in writing and to resolve writer's block. After a pre-defined time limit, what has been written is viewed and reflected on. This creates valuable ideas and constructions for texts.
This technique goes back to the American lecturer and author Gabriele Lusser Rico. Clustering is a brainstorming process and is used to get a visualized overview of a topic. In clustering, a keyword or a combination of words is first written in the middle of a sheet of paper. A circle is drawn around it. All terms that occur to the word are noted around and also circled. The different circles are then connected to form chains of association. The thought chains form a possible structure for suitable texts.
Other well-known methods of creative writing are, for example, journal writing (keeping a thought book that is regularly maintained) and brainwriting (written form of brainstorming in which ideas are individually written down by group participants and later brought together).
There are also a variety of writing games that support creative writing processes, e.g. B. the use of letter cubes or the writing of haikus (the shortest form of poetry in the world from Japan).
Learn creative writing
There are hundreds of universities in the United States that teach creative writing. Many renowned writers, such as Dave Eggers, have attended creative writing courses or teach creative writing.
In contrast to the USA, there are still few universities in Germany where creative writing is taught. The University of Hildesheim deserves a special mention here with its creative writing and cultural journalism course.
However, there are a large number of private writing institutes and writing workshops that offer courses and training courses for creative writing. Most community colleges also have creative writing courses in their programs. These usually teach methods for creative work and literary writing.
In addition to adult education, creative writing has now also found its way into the classroom. Instead of concentrating solely on spelling, dictations and essays, the creative use of language should also be taught in German lessons. This should have a positive effect on the expression and vocabulary of the students.
Anyone can be a good author if they learn the necessary tools. This is the thought behind the concept of creative writing.
Creative writing is all about overcoming writer's block and using language creatively. Various methods are available for this. The focus of creative writing is on having fun dealing with language. However, through the use of creative writing techniques, stories can also arise and texts can be refined.
Methods of creative writing have become an integral part of teaching German. In addition, some universities and a large number of private providers offer creative writing courses.
