How much upload speed is required for live streaming?

There are two main requirements for high quality live streaming. The first thing to do is ensure that the hardware is powerful enough to handle video encoding in real time. The second requirement is good upload speed.

Modern network cameras (IP-Cam) have everything you need for live streaming from HD to 4k quality. Providing a good upload speed for live streaming can be a challenge.

Before you call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to inquire about more bandwidth, you need to know how much upload speed is needed for live streaming. Unfortunately, it's one of those questions that doesn't have an exact answer.

It's the speed that allows you to stream the content you want to the platform of your choice without any hassle. The speed should be sufficient to deliver your content in a quality that does not put video marketing at a disadvantage. Basically anything between 1 Mbit / s and 50 Mbit / s can be necessary for a live stream.

A straight answer or not? Fortunately, we can give you some rules of thumb and general values ​​for good upload speeds. It also doesn't hurt to know a little more about upload speed in order to be able to plan and operate a live streaming for professional video marketing with live streaming. It's not that difficult to find the right upload speed for your live streaming needs.

What do people do most on the internet? Everyone knows, of course, that the most popular website in the world is Google. This is followed by YouTube, Facebook, Baidu and Wikipedia. So that's two search engines, an encyclopedia, a social network video platform, and a video platform / social network.

Download means downloading

People consume content online. They search, find - read, listen or look at each other. To do this, your devices must receive data that is transmitted in the form of bits and bytes. The download rate of the Internet connection shows how much data the computer can take in from the Internet via this connection. Usually the rate is expressed in kilobits (Kbit) or megabits (Mbit) per second (s).

Upload means uploading

If you want to create content and share it online, your internet connection upload rate is most important. It is the same as the download rate; it only works the other way around and shows how many data bits you can release per second. It is also expressed in megabits per second (Mbit / s). The data shows that upload rates are globally lower than download rates.

Streaming live video can use a lot of bandwidth. How much depends on some major and minor factors. The video codec, video compression, frame rate (frames per second / FPS) is important, but so is the type of content you want to stream. The platforms play a role, as do the resolution and frame rate of your stream on them.

For example, suppose you want to broadcast a video of yourself interviewing someone live. You can choose between Facebook Live, YouTube Live and Twitch. Since all platforms support live streaming of HD (formerly HD-Ready) 720p video, they use the recommended bitrate from each platform:

If you are streaming live video at 720p resolution at 25 frames per second, you will be uploading up to 0.5 megabytes of data per second. So an upload bandwidth of around 4 Mbit / s should cover you, right?

Not quite right. You have to constantly upload up to 4,000 kBit of data per second. Since these speeds fluctuate, it's generally a good idea to have a 35% to 40% buffer. This brings us to an upload rate of around 5,700 kbit per second or 5.7 Mbit / s. However, if you are sure that your internet connection is stable, such a buffer may not be necessary. Remember that a stable connection is just as important as an upload speed!

But that shouldn't be the declared bandwidth your Internet service provider gives you. For various reasons, the specified upload bandwidth of your connection and the actual upload speed you can achieve can vary considerably. Therefore, you should always test your upload speed. The tests should be carried out at different times of the day and days of the week so that you get a reliable result. The values ​​you get from these tests should be up to 4 Mbps if you want to stream HD 720p video.

The many variables that affect upload speed requirements

The upload speed of 5.7 Mbps for 720p video at 30 frames per second is the upper limit. You can still live stream 720p video at a slower upload speed. If all of the video is a single shot of you talking about something, 4Mbps might be too high a bit rate. It would probably be okay to cut them in half.

On the other hand, if you want to stream video games or events with a lot of visual information, 4 Mbit / s is required. The faster the tempo of the visual information, the higher the bit rate should be. So the type of content affects what is a good upload speed for you.

Let's stay in the area of ​​live cams. If you're streaming live cams with a lot of movement, like bodies of water or pan-tilt web cameras (PTZ), make sure that your viewers can see what's going on as clearly as possible. Virtual Reality 360 ° cameras require even higher resolutions. You may also want to stream at more than 25 frames per second if your webcam allows it. More images per second always means a higher bit rate.

A good upload speed for your live streaming will vary from platform to platform.

On Facebook Most streamers can only stream up to 720p video for the time being, so no more than 5 Mbps are required. To be able to live stream Full HD videos, you must apply for the Level Up affiliate program. The Level Up program is currently only available to gaming video creators in certain regions.

Twitch supports full HD 1080p videos at 50 frames per second. You need an upload speed of up to 7.4 Mbit / s for this.

YouTube Live supports 4k live streaming at 50 frames per second. It recommends a bit rate between 20 and 51 Mbit / s. You would need an upload speed of almost 70 Mbit / s to achieve the bit rate. That seems relatively high. With the expansion of broadband with fiber optic technology and 5G, however, it is closer than you think to obtain such bandwidths.

Better quality requires faster upload speeds. You can influence the upload speed requirements. In professional video marketing for companies or brands, you cannot afford to fall behind in terms of video quality. Eventually, in the end, the competition will push you to increase your upload rate.

  • For 1080p video at 25 frames per second, the bit rate should be between 3.5 and 5,000 Mbit / s - the same as for 720p video at 60 frames per second. The upload speeds are also the same, between 4.4 Mbit / s and 6.2 Mbit / s.
  • For 1080p video at 30 frames per second, the recommended bit rate is between 4.5 and 6 Mbit / s. That is a speed between 5.6 Mbit / s and 7.4 Mbit / s.

For YouTube

  • For 720p video at 25 frames per second, the range is 1.5 to 4 Mbps. That is a speed between about 2 Mbit / s and 5 Mbit / s.
  • For 720p video at 50 frames per second, the range is 2.25 to 6 Mbit / s. In terms of speed, the range is between 2.9 Mbit / s and 7.4 Mbit / s.
  • For 1080p video at 25 frames per second, the bit rate is between 3 and 6 Mbit / s. This corresponds to speeds between 3.8 Mbps and 7.4 Mbps.
  • For 1080p video at 50 frames per second, the bit rate range is 4.5 to 9 Mbit / s. At upload speeds, this means between 5.6 Mbit / s and 11 Mbit / s.
  • For 1440p video at 25 frames per second, the bit rate range is 6 to 13 kbps. That is between 7.4 Mbit / s and 15.8 Mbit / s at the recommended upload speeds.
  • For 1440p video at 50 frames per second, the range is 9 to 18 Mbps. For upload speeds, the range is between 11 Mbit / s and 21.8 Mbit / s.
  • If you really want to live stream 4k video, you'll need to upload between 13 and 34 Mbps at 25 frames per second. In terms of speed, that's 15.8 Mbit / s to 41 Mbit / s.
  • To stream 4k video at 50 frames per second, a bit rate of 20 to 51 kbps is recommended. You need an upload speed between 24.2 Mbit / s and about 61.5 Mbit / s.

As you can see, YouTube offers the highest quality live streaming. Facebook has the lowest requirements while Twitch is somewhere in between. Calculating upload speed with numbers is a clear and simple thing. Making sure you have access to it in the office is something else entirely. Most of the time, the problem is that the availability of the theoretical values ​​can be more difficult than you think.

ADSL technology or a further development such as ADSL2 or ADSL2 + is mostly used for private users. The download speed is faster than the upload speed. There are different speeds available on the market. When using a live cam, you should at least look carefully! With ADSL there are large fluctuations in the download and upload speed. At first glance, its 16 Mbit / s connection has enough speed. However, it may be that only 1 Mbit / s upload speed is available, which is sufficient for a weak HD live stream.


With a VDSL connection you are usually more on the safe side. Symmetrical Internet connections allow data to be transmitted at the same speed in both directions. SDSL is mostly used by business customers and to connect network components. Ethernet is a synchronous network technology. The data is usually transmitted via so-called twisted pair cables, copper or fiber optic cables. Ethernet internet is available in most locations. What does the future hold?

As for the sheer speed of internet connections, the good news is that internet connections are getting faster and faster across the board. Technologies such as fiber optic internet, a requirement for 5G, bring higher speeds. Unfortunately, the bad news is that someone at your location has to offer it too.

The first step in getting more upload speed for live streaming is to find the fastest provider in your location and get a contract! Be prepared to pay more for more speed, however. Before signing a contract, ask about the quality of the service.

If you need to work with a provider that offers a slower speed, there are still a few things you can do to improve your situation:

  • Use the connection exclusively for the livecam. If your connection is a bit slow, avoid additional line loads, e.g. through public WiFi for guests, beach visitors or your company.
  • Obtain a wired connection. Your WiFi may be great when it comes to watching YouTube videos on your smartphone or accessing social media. But when it comes to live streaming, you want to have a wired connection. It gives you less interference and more stability, which leads to better stream quality. If you have no chance of a network cable, use directional antennas. Only directional antennas offer the transmission strength and quality of the connection to enable live streaming in high quality and reliability!
  • Remove unnecessary devices from your network. You don't want your internet connection to be cluttered when you start streaming. Don't let another device hinder your upload speed.
