Samsung Galaxy S9: is it still worth buying?

The Galaxy S9 is Samsung's flagship smartphone from 2018. Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy S8, it had the reputation of being more evolution than revolution. Nevertheless, the 5.8-inch smartphone is still very much in demand today - always new in offers, but also on the used market. Reason for us to ask: is it still worth buying the Galaxy S9 in 2021? Our check gives the answers.

Hardware: Still fast

In Europe, Samsung has installed the company's own Exynos 9810 in the Galaxy S9. The SoC comes with an octa-core processor and Mali-G72 GPU and is flanked by 4 GB of RAM. This means that the smartphone will still achieve good performance in 2021 and does not really have to hide from devices from the next generation of products in the Geekbench ranking. Of course, it is now clearly surpassed by the current top models.

As far as storage space is concerned, variants with 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB are offered. However, the surcharge for more GB can be avoided using the microSD slot. Thanks to it, the storage can be expanded inexpensively by up to 1 TB.

The brilliant and bright OLED display of the Galaxy S9 does not need a notch and has a resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 pixels with a display ratio of 18.5: 9. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 5, the entire housing has an IP68 certification for water and dust protection.

Of course, the Galaxy S9 cannot come up with the current trend features 5G and Wifi 6. In the connect test, the Galaxy S9 showed good cellular performance in the LTE and UMTS network. The camera delivers very good photo quality. However, there were downsides with the battery life, which falls short of expectations.

Briefly introduced: Samsung Galaxy S9

Technical data and features of the Samsung Galaxy S9 at a glance.

Attention - here is our note on used smartphones: The Galaxy S9 has a built-in battery, the runtime of which can of course become weaker over the years. You should take this into account when buying second-hand.

Android updates and security: everything up to date

The Galaxy S9 came out with Android 8.0 Oreo. The update to Android 9 Pie and thus the new Samsung user interface One UI is already available, as is the update to Android 10.

When it comes to security updates, the Galaxy S9 is also among the first. Like the successors Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21, Samsung continues to provide monthly security updates. The Galaxy S8, on the other hand, only receives quarterly security updates.

And how does it look in the future? We no longer expect the update to Android 11 for the Galaxy S9. The recently announced Samsung guarantee for three Android updates for flagship models is only valid from the Galaxy S10. The security updates will soon only be made quarterly.

Price development: 400 euros are possible

At the market launch in Germany, the price for the cheapest Galaxy S9 model was 849 euros. The Galaxy S9 + was exactly 100 euros more expensive at 949 euros.

The price has dropped significantly since then. Already in the course of 2019, bargains for 400 euros were possible - for example on Black Friday 2019. However, the cheapest price at renowned retailers is currently fluctuating around 450 to 500 euros in the region. This indicates that individual residual items are primarily being sold.

The price fluctuations show: With the Galaxy S9 it is worth keeping your eyes open for attractive special offers. These can be found locally for individual dealers or online as part of large campaign days.
